We offer elective 3D prenatal Ultrasounds to provide a positive bonding experience for the mother, father and family members with the unborn baby. We feel that realistic surface images provide a connection between the parents and baby that can be beneficial to the whole family.

You may think of 3D Ultrasound as being a still image or photograph that provides a sense of depth compared with 2D ultrasound. 2D ultrasound is the more common, diagnostic ultrasound performed by physicians, which shows cross sectional views of anatomy, but requires greater medical knowledge and understanding of anatomy to interpret or even understand the images.

Since this is an elective procedure and is not intended to be a replacement for a comprehensive fetal ultrasound, you will need to pay the cost of this ultrasound as an out-of-pocket expense. Insurance does not cover the costs of optional ultrasounds.

The best time to perform 3D ultrasound is between 28-32 weeks gestational age.

On the day of your visit, you will receive a 15 – 20 minute Ultrasound scan and a CD-R with all of the still photos (4 – 10) taken during the exam in JPEG format – suitable for printing and e-mailing to family and friends. In fact, we encourage our clients to invite family and friends to attend the elective 3D ultrasound session. (Limit of 4 adults please.)

On the day of your appointment, have a good meal 30-60 minutes prior to arriving. Drink 1 to 2 glasses of fruit juice 20-30 minutes prior to the appointment unless otherwise ordered by your physician. We would like your baby to be awake during your exam for a more thrilling experience. We would also like some fluids in your bladder to bring the baby’s head out of the pelvis, but it does not need to be extremely full. Your general increase in fluids for 2 days prior to the exam will also increase the chances of having a successful 3D sonogram.

Note that on any given day, some babies are just not cooperative. We will spend approximately 20 minutes of scan time to try to get the optimal images for you. If this does not work, you may reschedule your visit within two weeks for another attempt.

Important Notice: Women seeking an elective prenatal ultrasound must already be an established obstetrics patient of Dr. Jennifer Dulaney. A medical, diagnostic ultrasound to confirm due date, screen for birth defects, and to look for any other pregnancy related issues must have been previously completed. Please note, at no time is this exam to be used in place of a complete diagnostic ultrasound.
